MEET THE WINNER OF THE 2023 COMPETITION
HEIDI HOLMES
Winner of the 2023 competition, Artist
Heidi Holmes' practice begins with symptoms that develop within a body and then exist outside of a body as material. These symptom-to-material installations encompass reconstruction, sculpture and atmosphere and reference domestic decoration, medicine, bodily functions, aging and feminist theory. Recent exhibitions have included a reimagining of a hot flush through a collection of cooking pots continuously boiling water and an ode to lubricant through an installation that repeated wet and dry gestures. Currently, the symptom-materials in these works reflect the conditions of Menopause, inclusive of hormone-withdrawl Menopause and Perimenopause. Formerly, these materials were determined by the annals of failed fertility and childlessness.
Australian visual artist Heidi Holmes (she/her) has a BFA(Hons) from (VCA) The University of Melbourne and an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Holmes has exhibited internationally in solo and curated exhibitions and was recently featured in Angela Balzano's book, To do away with the family, From abortion to post-human relationships, published by Meltemi Press. Holmes is a current member of Power Plant's esteemed Emerging Artist Network in Toronto,

ABOUT THE PROJECT
'The Materials of Menopause' by Heidi Holmes, Canada.
The jury was impressed by this proposal because it tackles a topic that is under-researched and mysterious, yet relatable to a large percentage of the population, and it does so in a way that is innovative, engaging and thought-provoking. The use of everyday materials and sounds to create a spatial impression of a body is an intriguing approach that challenges traditional figurative and documentative strategies of the body, while the site-specific installations encompass reconstruction, sculpture, and atmosphere, referencing a wide range of themes including domestic decoration, medicine, bodily functions, ageing, and feminist theory. Overall, this proposal demonstrates a high level of creativity, innovation, and conceptual rigour.
